As you may be aware, I used to live on the island of Penang in the nation of Malaysia from July 2015 to December 2020.
I am privileged to call this my third home. Let me give you a bird’s-eye view:
既にご存じの方もおられるかと思いますが、小生2015年7月から2020年12月までマレーシア・ペナン島に住んでいました
今となっては小生にとって「第三の故郷」と言うべき場所です どのような場所か、まず簡単にご紹介しましょう：
For Starters 概略
Penang – Pulau Pinang in the Malay language – means “the island of areca nut palm”.
The island sits on the highly strategic Straits of Malacca, at approximately 5 degrees north latitude, 100 degrees east longitude.
Land area: 293 square kilometers/113 square miles, approximately 40% larger than Washington DC, according to Wikipedia.
Population: More than 800,000 people as of the end of calendar 2019 according to Malaysia’s Department of Statistics.
ペナン（Penang／マレー語ではプラウ・ピナン Pulau Pinang）の名は「檳榔樹の島」を意味します
このシマは戦略上の要衝マラッカ海峡に浮かび、およそ北緯5度・東経100度の位置にあります
面積は293平方キロ、淡路島のおよそ半分 人口はおよそ80万人（マレーシア国家統計局2019）
Just to clarify – “Penang” is also the name of the second smallest state in Malaysia.
If you add the mainland side, the area is 1,049 square kilometers, population approximately 1.78 million.
補足しますと「ペナン」とは連邦国家マレーシアで2番目に小さい州の名前でもあります
本土側を含めると面積は1,049平方キロ、人口は約178万人です
Small dot in a region full of islands?
Yes, but you’ll be surprised to see the variety this small place has to offer. Let me share a small glimpse.
数えきれないほどの島が点在する東南アジアに在ってはちっぽけに見えるかもしれませんが、実に驚くべき多様性を持っています

Heritage 歴史
Francis Light of the British East India Company arrived and set up a transshipment port (entrepot) here in 1786. The heritage area where this colonial history is preserved is listed on the UNESCO world heritage list.
1786年（日本の元号で天明6年）英国東インド会社のフランシス・ライトFrancis Lightが貿易港として開港 その時代の名残をとどめる町並みがUNESCO世界遺産リストに登録されています
Where Do Folks Live? みんな何処に暮らしてるの？
Today, the island is full of high-rise residential towers, old and new.
I used to live in one of these – guess which one?
現在のシマは高層マンションが立ち並びます
小生が住んでいたマンションも、この写真のうちのひとコマに写っています どれでしょう？
The island is also dotted with shopping malls catering to all tastes and needs, from high-end boutiques to supermarkets and cinemas/movie theaters.
シマにはショッピングモールが点在し、高級ブティックからスーパー・映画館まで何でも揃っています
On the other hand, traditional markets still draw strong support from locals.
その一方、昔ながらの市場も地元民から根強く支持されています
The Waterfront 水辺は？
If you have beaches in mind, I would recommend going to Langkawi or one of the islands on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula.
That being said, there are some nice spots on the water where you can watch a beautiful sunrise – including a place not far from where I lived.

Blessings from the Forest, Sea, and Factory 海幸山幸そして工業団地
Penang is famous for durian – the King of Fruits – which is grown in forests such as these – sorry, not my cup of tea!

もっとも、小生は苦手ですが…
And you will be surprised to find fishing villages here…
漁業を営んでいる人もいます
But high-end technology and manufacturing is the backbone of the Penang economy today. I used to work for a company that had an operation here – although most of my work had to do with things that were happening in other parts of the world.
しかし、現代のペナン経済を支えているのはハイテク製造業 小生もここに拠点を置くある企業に勤めていました（もっとも、自分の業務のほとんどはシマの外の世界各地に関するものでしたが）
Top of the Hill 山の頂き
In the middle of it all is the 833-meter/2,733-foot Penang Hill (known as Bukit Bendera in the Malay language), the top of which you can visit by funicular railway. A bit over-commercialized lately in my humble opinion, but the view remains spectacular.
シマの中心には標高833メートルのPenang Hill（マレー語ではBukit Bendera）という山がそびえ、ケーブルカーで頂上に行くことができます
最近は商業化が進んでいますが、眺めは最高です
In the End…Penang is all about Makan 結局は、何だかんだ言ってメシ
More than anything, Penang is all about food (makan in the Malay language)…glorious FOOD. Make sure you arrive with a healthy tummy and robust appetite!
何と言っても、ペナンと言えばズバリ「食」（マレー語ではmakan マカン）
ご来島の際は胃腸の調子を整えた上で、お腹を空かせていきましょう！
