What is your hometown? あなたの「ふるさと」はどこですか？
If I am allowed to give only one answer, it is Sannomiya, the central business district of Kobe. That is where I was brought into this world, and where my earliest memories are from.
一か所だけ答えよ、と言われればそれは自分が生まれ物心ついた神戸三宮です
But if I am allowed to give multiple answers, I would name a place on the other side of the world from Kobe as my hometown, without a moment’s hesitation.
It is a small town called Hartsville in the Deep Southern US state of South Carolina. I lived there from May 1980 to June 1985 because of my dad’s expatriate assignment.
That is where I acquired the language that I am writing in right now – we were the only Asians in town back in those days.
しかし複数回答が許されるならば、神戸から見て地球の反対側にある小さな町を迷うことなく第二の「ふるさと」として挙げるでしょう
その町は米国ディープサウス（深南部）のサウスカロライナ（South Carolina）州、その北東部にあるハーツヴィル（Hartsville）といいます 1980年5月～1985年6月の間、父の駐在に伴い住んでいました
当時アジア人で住んでいたのは我々一家族のみ このブログで用いるもう一つの言語は生きていくために身に着けました
Back in September 2019 I rented a car and went on a road trip around the eastern part of South Carolina, after a week of work in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Hartsville was my natural first stop. Let me give you a glimpse of what it’s like, starting with the intersection in the heart of town.
2019年9月、サンフランシスコベイエリアの（当時の）勤務先の本社で仕事をしてから飛行機で大陸を横断し、レンタカーでサウスカロライナ東部を一周する旅をしました
最初に立ち寄ったのは言うまでもなくハーツヴィル まずは町のど真ん中の交差点からお見せしましょう
The population within city limits is around 8,000, then and now – but this little town is home to Sonoco, a Fortune 500 company and a leader in the packaging industry.
That is why we have a small but well-regarded liberal arts college here called Coker University. Beautiful campus.
(By the way…my dad was seconded there by his employer based in Osaka which has a long-running relationship with Sonoco since the mid-1960’s.)
市域内人口は昔も今も8,000人前後、しかしこの小さな町はSonocoという企業の本社所在地 「フォーチュン500」に名を連ねる包装業界大手です
（ちなみに、父を派遣した大阪の某中堅企業は1960年代半ばからSonocoと提携関係にあります）
そのおかげで、この町はCoker Universityという小規模ながら評判の良いリベラルアーツ大学を抱えています 素敵なキャンパスでしょう？
Back to downtown. When I was living on the town’s outskirts, this was a fairly nondescript scene – so I was surprised to see how they beautified it in my absence.

私が町から少し離れたところに住んでいた頃は特徴に乏しい場所でしたが、いつの間にかとてもきれいになっていてビックリ！

City Hall is also quite elegant. It used to house a bank when I lived there.
市役所庁舎もなかなか素敵です わたくしが住んでいた当時は銀行でした
But nothing is as special as being welcomed back by a dear classmate and her cool hubby!
しかし、学校の心優しき同級生が男前のご夫君と共に迎えてくれることほど嬉しいことはありません！
