It’s getting mighty chilly these days here in Yokohama – and every shopping mall around here is full of jack-‘o-lanterns and other reminders of this observance called Halloween.
If you thought of wishing me “Happy Halloween”, may I humbly remind you of something far more significant that actually took place on October 31.

最近ショッピングモールなどでハロウィーンの飾りつけを見ることが多くなりました
10月31日の夜、渋谷のスクランブル交差点が巨大なパーティー会場のようになっていましたが、10月31日が別の意味で世界史的に大きな意味を持つ日であることはご記憶でしょうか？
What Happened? 何があったのか
On this day in 1517, a 34-year-old theology professor and monk (and a former student of secular law like yours truly) in the German town of Wittenberg invited his fellow scholars to a discussion on whether you and I can buy our way into heaven with cash. No one back then expected this event to trigger what we now call the Reformation.
1517年のこの日、ドイツのヴィッテンベルクに住んでいた当時34歳の神学者兼修道士（そして元法学徒）が「免罪符」の是非について学者仲間に議論を呼びかけました
これが後に「宗教改革」と呼ばれる出来事を引き起こすとは、当時誰も想像だにしなかったようです
I finally had the opportunity to watch a documentary produced by Ligonier Ministries on the life and legacy of Martin Luther, the German Reformer whom the Lord used to bring His church back to His Word.
教会を御言葉（聖書）のもとに回復させるため主が用いた器、マルティン・ルター
米国フロリダ州に本部をおく改革派の伝道団体リゴニア・ミニストリーズ（Ligonier Ministries）が彼の生涯と働きについて制作したドキュメンタリー映画をやっと観ることができました（宗教改革500年記念の企画だったようです）
I was impressed by how the film portrays the dreadful “conform or die” pressure that Luther faced for simply trying to call to repentance the church that he was a part of.
I also felt that the film did a great job of portraying Luther as the flawed sinner that he was. He was filled with a holy indignation against God’s Word being defiled, but his propensity toward anger also led him to write, say, and do things which were quite reprehensible, especially toward the Jews.
悔い改めを迫るメッセージを語ったためにルターが受けた迫害の凄まじさを効果的に描いている点に感銘を受けました
また、ルターが優れた賜物と同時に多くの弱さをもっていたこと、特に「怒り」に突き動かされやすいために後日悔恨を残す発言や行動を行ったことを漏れなく描いていることも印象に残りました
Much More than a Historical Event – with Implications for Today 単なる過去の出来事にあらず
More than anything, I was refreshed by the reminder that the Reformation is not merely a historical event.
The film makes it very clear that the Reformation is, in fact, in progress this very day, literally as I write and you read these words. It is taking place each time we actively listen to, with faith, the Word of God being preached, each time a believer in Christ resists the temptation to give in to his or her sinful desires and follow what the Word of God commands, not what “the world” or “the culture” says is acceptable.
何よりも、宗教改革が単なる過去の出来事ではないこと、私たちが御言葉の解き明かしを信仰をもって聴き受け止め、自らの良からぬ欲求やこの世の同調圧力に屈することなく御言葉の命ずるところに従うとき宗教改革は現在進行形であることを指摘している点が心に残りました
This past year I think I have seen how – and why – the church has been weakened. I have seen and heard how many a church here in Japan has given up on meeting publicly because of the pandemic, even though our government has not issued official bans on houses of worship meeting publicly.
While I understand that many of our congregations are aging rapidly and may not be blessed with the technical resources to livestream worship services, I cannot help wondering whether we Japanese Christians have been neglecting what Scripture commands us all to do: “Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near” (Hebrews 10:24-25 NKJV).
昨年12月に本帰国して以来、多くの教会が公に集うことを断念する中で、教会とそこに集う信徒がどのように弱体化するかを目の当たりにしたように思います
高齢化、技術的リソースの不足など事情は様々でしょうが、我々日本の信徒は主がこのように命じておられることを軽視していないか、懸念せずにはいられないのです：
「互いに愛と善行に励むように心がけ、ある人たちの習慣に倣って集会を怠ったりせず、むしろ励まし合いましょう。かの日が近付いているのをあなたがたは知っているのですから、ますます励まし合おうではありませんか」（ヘブライ人への手紙10章24～25節）
As the Apostle Peter declared before the Jewish council, I must obey God rather than man (Acts 5:29). It is only through obeying God’s Word that I can truly serve my neighbors.
使徒ペトロがユダヤ人指導者の会議で語った通り「人間に従うよりも、神に従わなくてはなりません」（使徒言行録5章29節）
御言葉に聴き従ってこそ、私たちは隣人に真に仕えることができるのです
